Overview

Pathashaala is a zero black water campus that utilizes Urine Diversion Dry Composting Toilets (UDDT). During phase 2 of construction, we had to explore new options as Shital Cera discontinued the manufacturing of these toilet bowls. Various designs have been created and installed in dormitories, guesthouses, senior dorms, and the administration & library block. These facilities have been satisfactorily utilized not only by over 120 students and 25 staff members but also by visitors and parents during their visits to Pathashaala. A feature on these dry toilets was also showcased on NDTV.

October 2nd (Gandhi Jayanti) and April 2 (World Earth Day) hold special significance at Pathashaala, as all residents come together to harvest compost from the dry toilets and offer it to the plants on the campus. Schools and individual visitors often visit Pathashaala to partake in this unique effort of closing the sanitation cycle without relying on sewage water. Pathashaala gladly shares these details with interested institutions and organizations. If this design is replicated, we kindly request that it be labeled as 'Based on the design of Pathashaala, Palar Centre for Learning, KFI, India.'

Notably, Smt. Santha Sheela Naire (IAS Retd and former Joint Chairman, TN State Planning Commission) visited Pathashaala and harvested compost from the dry toilets on October 2, 2015. She addressed all residents and visitors, stating, 'There is no better way to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.'
